Very impressive progress. The jump from 02 to 03 is bigger than the name suggests — Figure redesigned the robot from the ground up rather than iterating on it.
The headline changes:
- Vision: a new camera architecture with twice the frame rate, a quarter of the latency and a 60% wider field of view per camera.
- Hands: softer, more compliant fingertips, a camera embedded in each palm so the robot can still see when the head cameras are blocked, and Figure’s own tactile sensors that register as little as three grams of pressure.
- Actuators: about twice the speed with better torque density, which is what makes the pick-and-place look quicker.
- Body: 9% lighter and noticeably smaller, wrapped in washable soft textiles and foam instead of exposed machined parts.
- Power: wireless inductive charging through coils in the feet, so it can dock and recharge itself.
The deeper change is who it is built for. Figure 02 was there to prove a humanoid could do real factory work. Figure 03 is designed for the home — and, just as importantly, for mass manufacturing: die-casting and injection moulding in place of CNC machining, on a line intended to build up to 12,000 robots a year.
